Block Puzzle Games in 2026: What the Top 100 on Google Play Tell Us

We looked at the 100 most installed block puzzle games on Google Play: 3 billion installs, one dominant game, ads in 98 of them, and a new wave of jam puzzles. The numbers, the charts and the data.

Block puzzles are one of the biggest casual genres on Android, and one of the most crowded. We collected the Google Play store pages of the 100 most installed block puzzle games to see how the genre looks in 2026: who leads it, how the games make money, how they are rated and what is new.

How we built the dataset

On September 25, 2026 we searched Google Play in the US store (English) for block puzzles with 16 searches such as block puzzle, block blast, wood block puzzle, block sudoku and 1010, alongside our wider collection of 1,960 games. We counted a game as a block puzzle when its title or short description calls it one (a block puzzle, block blast or block sudoku, Woodoku-style games and 1010-style games) and left out falling-block games like Tetris. That gave 164 games, and we kept the 100 with the most installs.

The block puzzle label covers more than one kind of game. 83 of the 100 are classic grid puzzles (drag pieces onto a board and clear full lines), 13 are jam, slide or escape puzzles, 2 merge number blocks and 2 are jigsaw hybrids. Install counts are from Google Play's page data; ratings are Google's averages. We make a block puzzle ourselves, Block Brain, which is too new to be in the top 100.

One game dominates the genre

The top 100 add up to about 3.0 billion installs, but they are shared very unevenly. Block Blast! has passed a billion installs on its own, 36% of the total, and the top 10 together hold 72%. The median game in the top 100 has about 6 million installs.

Notice how generic the names are: several of the top ten are simply called Block Puzzle. Search is how players find these games, so developers name them after the search.

How block puzzles make money: ads

Block puzzles are an ad business. 98 of the top 100 carry Google Play's Contains ads label, and 37 of them sell nothing at all, so ads are their only income. 63 also sell in-app purchases, usually coins, boosters or an option to remove ads. The two games without ads, Block Jam and Cube Land, are 3D color puzzles rather than classic grid games.

The purchases are also cheaper than in other genres. The median most expensive item is $29.99, against $99.99 in our study of idle games. That fits the genre: a block puzzle is played in short sessions by a huge audience, and a little ad income from each player adds up.

For players this means one thing: there is almost no block puzzle without ads. If ads bother you, look for a game that sells a no-ads option, or play offline, where ads cannot load. Our list of the best block puzzle games covers both.

Ratings: a well-liked genre

The median rating in the top 100 is 4.52 stars, and 60% are rated 4.5 or higher. That is higher than idle games (4.35 in our idle study). Block puzzles are simple, familiar and hard to get wrong, and players seem to forgive the ads.

Offline and always updated

77% of the top 100 carry Google's Offline tag, far more than idle games (41%). Block puzzles need nothing from a server, which makes them a natural choice for flights and commutes. They are also well maintained: 47% were updated in the last 30 days and 95% in the last year.

The new wave: jam puzzles

Most of today's top block puzzles are classic grid games from 2018 to 2023. The newest hits look different. Of the 13 top-100 games released in 2025, 6 are jam, slide or escape puzzles, like Color Block Jam (released in 2024, more than 10 million installs), where you slide colored blocks out of a board instead of placing pieces on it.

What block puzzles are called

87% of the top 100 have puzzle in their title. After block and puzzle, the most common words are wood (22 titles), blast (16), jewel (15), classic (11), color (10) and sudoku (6): a genre that sells itself as relaxing, familiar and a little bit shiny.

Who makes block puzzles

The top 100 come from 91 different developers, so apart from a few hits, the genre is made of many small studios with one game each. 96% of the games are rated Everyone.

What this means for players

• Expect ads. 98% of popular block puzzles have them. Pick the game whose ads bother you least, or buy the no-ads option if there is one.
• Play offline if you want quiet. 77% work offline, and without a connection there are no ads.
• Do not judge by the name. Many games have the same generic title; check the developer, rating and recent reviews instead.
• Try a jam puzzle if classic block puzzles feel samey. It is the genre's newest idea.
