Stuck in an Idle RPG? How to Break Through a Progression Wall
A step-by-step checklist for when an idle RPG stops moving: why walls happen, what to check first, which upgrades to buy, when to farm and when to rebirth, with examples from two idle RPGs we made.
Every idle RPG has walls: points where a boss keeps winning and upgrades barely help. They are there on purpose, because costs grow faster than your power. The way through is almost always one of four things: a missed upgrade with a big return, a milestone you are close to, a stronger team setup, or a rebirth.
Quick checklist: fill every slot, check for milestones, use burst skills at the start of the boss fight, farm for an hour, and if nothing moves, rebirth.
Why you are stuck
Enemy health in idle RPGs grows exponentially. In our Idle Ronin it grows by about 55% per stage early on, and bosses have 6 times the health of their stage's normal enemies, or 10 times on stages ending in 4 or 9. Your damage grows in steps. When a big-health boss meets a period without new steps, you hit a wall. Our guide to idle game progression shows the maths.
Step 1: Check the basics
- Every slot filled? Each unit or monster on the field adds damage.
- Any cheap upgrades left? Look for upgrades that give a lot for their price, often ones you forgot about in other menus.
- Any rewards unclaimed? Quests, pass tiers, achievements and mail often hold currency.
- Any free boosts available? A damage or gold boost from a rewarded video can be exactly enough.
Step 2: Fight the boss smarter
- Use burst skills at the start. The boss timer is short (30 seconds at the start in Idle Ronin, about 30 in Idle Summoner). Front-load your damage.
- Use timer skills. In Idle Summoner, Freeze pauses the boss timer for a few seconds.
- Check the boss's stage. If you are stuck on a stage ending in 4 or 9 in Idle Ronin, the boss has 10 times normal health; the next stages will be easier.
Step 3: Farm and upgrade
Losing to a boss costs nothing in most idle RPGs: the game sends you back to farm the stage before. Let it farm for an hour, or overnight, and spend everything on the best-value upgrades. Offline farming counts too; in Idle Ronin your squad farms the last wave before the boss while you are away.
Step 4: Aim for a milestone
Many idle RPGs give a big multiplier at certain levels. In Idle Ronin, a unit's ATK doubles at level 50 and quadruples at level 100. If a unit is a few levels short of one, that is the best place for your gold.
Step 5: Improve the team
- Use set bonuses. In Idle Ronin, units from the same set boost each other. See our guide to idle RPG team building.
- Check gear and rerolls. A better stat on gear can be worth several levels.
- Swap weak members for stronger ones, even at lower level, if their bonuses fit the team.
Step 6: Rebirth
If none of the above moves you forward, the game is telling you to rebirth. The permanent bonus makes the next run faster, and you will pass the wall easily next time. In Idle Ronin, the rebirth button lights up when a rebirth would pay at least as much as your last one. Our guide to prestige, rebirth and ascension explains when it pays most.
Walls you should not fight
Some walls are designed for another system: a boss that needs gear you have not unlocked yet, a tower floor far above your campaign stage, or a dungeon level beyond your power. Leave them and come back later. Idle games reward patience; you do not have to win every fight now.
FAQ
Why can't I beat the boss in my idle game?
Usually because the boss has much more health than normal enemies and you have to win within a timer. Upgrade, use burst skills early in the fight, farm, and rebirth if you stay stuck.
How long should I stay stuck before rebirthing?
If an hour of farming and upgrading does not get you past a boss, a rebirth is usually the faster way forward.
Do idle games get easier after rebirth?
Yes: the permanent bonus makes the early game much faster, and you pass your old wall with ease. Later walls come back, which is how the game keeps you growing.
