A tycoon game is a business simulation: you run a company (a theme park, a railway, a factory, a mine) and grow it by making smart decisions about what to build, upgrade and sell. On phones, most tycoon games are idle tycoons: the business keeps earning while you are away, and your job is to reinvest.
Two kinds: a management sim asks you to run every detail actively. An idle tycoon automates the work and asks you to decide where the money goes next.
Where tycoon games come from
The word comes from the classic business games of the 1990s on PC, such as Railroad Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon, where you built and managed a whole company. Those games were detailed management simulations, and the genre still lives on in games like Game Dev Tycoon, which puts you in a garage making your first video game and ends with a big studio.
On phones the genre met idle games. The result, the idle tycoon, kept the business theme and replaced the micromanagement with automation and offline earnings. Idle tycoons are now the biggest part of the idle genre: in our study of 847 idle games, "tycoon" was in 29% of the titles, and Idle Miner Tycoon alone has more than 100 million installs.

How an idle tycoon works
Most idle tycoons share the same machine:
- A production chain. Something is made, moved and sold: ore is mined, carried up and stored; eggs are laid and shipped.
- Bottlenecks. Income is limited by the slowest part of the chain, so the right upgrade is usually the one that fixes the bottleneck.
- Managers or automation keep each part running without you.
- Milestones multiply production at certain levels.
- Offline earnings pay you for time away.
- Prestige resets the business for a permanent bonus.
An example: Idle AI Factory
We make an idle tycoon, Idle AI Factory, so here is how the machine looks from the inside. Floors produce goods, robots work them, and trucks deliver the goods and bring back coins. Each floor has a level, and reaching levels 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 doubles its production. Trucks can become the bottleneck, which is why the game has research for truck speed and capacity. AI Research adds permanent bonuses, collectible robots add their own, and a Factory Reboot trades your progress for AI Cores once you pass level 40. While you are away, the factory keeps earning at a share of its normal rate.
How to get good at tycoon games
- Find the bottleneck. Upgrade the part of the chain everything is waiting for.
- Automate first. A manager that frees you from tapping is worth more than a small boost.
- Save for milestones. A x2 at the right level beats many small upgrades.
- Reset when growth stalls. Tycoons with prestige reward it generously.
