Only 11% of idle games keep every in-app item under $20. The best of them, with the real price of their most expensive item, plus how to tell a fair idle game from a pay-to-win one.
A free-to-play friendly idle game is one you can enjoy completely without paying, where money only speeds up what you would earn anyway. The simplest sign of it is on the store page: the price of the most expensive item. In our study of idle games on Google Play, only 92 of 806 idle games that sell anything, about 11%, keep every item at $20 or less. Here are the best of them.

How we picked
We took the idle games in our dataset with at least 100,000 installs, a rating of 4.5 or more from at least 2,000 players, and no in-app item above $20 (prices from the US store on September 25, 2026). Then we left out games that had not been updated in the last year. A low price ceiling does not make a game perfect, but it makes it very hard to be pay-to-win.

Exponential Idle
A math-inspired incremental with some of the lowest prices in the genre. It has ads, but the shop is so small that nothing you can buy changes the game much. Rated 4.73.
Gym Idle Clicker
Train a gym hero by tapping and idling. More than 50 million installs, and nothing costs more than $2.99.
Egg, Inc.
The idle farming classic from 2016 keeps its most expensive item at $19.99, unusually low for a game this big (10M+ installs).
Hero Tale and Wizard's Wheel 2
Two idle RPGs with modest shops: Hero Tale tops out at $8.99, Wizard's Wheel 2 at $19.99. Good choices if you want an RPG without a $99 bundle in sight.
Capybara Clicker
No ads and nothing above $11.99: about as gentle as a free idle game gets.
Cozy and tycoon picks
Window Garden (a lofi garden idle game), Tiny Shop (craft and sell), TAP! DIG! MY MUSEUM! (dig up fossils) and Idle City Builder all stay at or under $20.
How to tell if an idle game is F2P-friendly
- Check the top price. Google Play lists the range of in-app item prices. At $20 or below, a game cannot sell you much power.
- Look at what is sold. Speed-ups and cosmetics are fine. Exclusive heroes or items you cannot earn by playing are not.
- Watch for energy and hard timers. A game that stops you playing unless you pay or wait is designed to sell you time.
- Check whether events can be finished for free. Many games make the last event reward reachable only with a pass.
- Read recent reviews for "pay to win". Players say it loudly when a game crosses the line.

In fairness, here are the top in-app prices of our own games on Google Play in the US: Idle AI Factory $9.49, Block Brain $9.49, Idle Ronin $37.99 and Idle Summoner $74.99. They are too new to have the ratings this list asks for, so we left them out.

What does F2P-friendly mean?
That a free-to-play game can be fully enjoyed without paying: everything important can be earned by playing, and purchases only save time.
Are idle games pay-to-win?
Most are not strictly pay-to-win, because they are single-player: you are not losing to anyone who paid. But many sell large boosts, and 60% of idle games sell an item for $99.99 or more.
What is the fairest idle game?
By price, Exponential Idle: nothing in its shop costs more than $3.99. Among games with no ads, Capybara Clicker stops at $11.99.
