How Much Storage Do Mobile Games Use? (And How to Free Space Safely)

Why some games take a few megabytes and others several gigabytes, how to see what a game really uses, and how to free space without losing your progress: cache, archiving and the one button to avoid.
Mobile games use anything from a few megabytes to several gigabytes. Small puzzle and idle games are usually light; 3D games with big worlds, voice acting and high-resolution art take the most. On top of the download, games keep data and cache that grow as you play, so the real size is often larger than the store suggests.
Safe way to free space: clear the cache or archive games you are not playing. Do not use "Clear storage" on a game unless its progress is saved in the cloud; it deletes your save.
Where a game's size comes from
- Art: textures, animations and backgrounds are usually the biggest part.
- Audio: music and voices, especially in story games.
- Extra downloads: many games download more content after installing, at first launch or with updates.
- Data and cache: your save, settings and temporary files that grow over time.
Code is usually a small part. When we slimmed down one of our upcoming games, it was all art: changing how its textures were compressed and packing its sprites into shared sheets cut the build from 419 MB to 170 MB, with the same images on screen.
How to see what a game really uses
On most Android phones: open Settings > Apps, choose the game, then Storage & cache. You see the app size, user data and cache separately. Phone makers name these menus slightly differently, but the information is the same.

Archiving is the least known and the most useful. Google Play can archive apps you do not use: it removes the app but keeps your data, and when you tap the icon again, it downloads the game and you pick up where you left off. You can let Google Play archive unused apps automatically; some of the steps need Android 15 or newer.
Before you delete a game
Make sure your progress is somewhere else first. Most games save to Google Play Games or to an account; all four of ours use Google Play Games cloud save. Our guide to transferring game progress shows how to check.
How to keep games from filling your phone
- Archive games you have paused instead of uninstalling them.
- Clear the cache of big games now and then.
- Watch update sizes. Some games download large updates; update on Wi-Fi.
- Prefer light genres on small phones. Puzzle, idle and 2D games are usually far smaller than 3D action games.
- Keep free space. A nearly full phone slows down, and games lag.
