A block puzzle game gives you pieces made of squares and a grid to place them on. Fill a whole row or column and it clears, making room for more. There is usually no time limit: the game ends when none of your pieces fits anywhere. Simple rules, endless variety, and one of the most popular genres on phones.
The rules in three lines: drag a piece onto the board, fill a full row or column to clear it, and keep going until no piece fits. Clearing several lines at once scores more.
How a block puzzle works
- The board: usually 8x8 (Block Blast!), 9x9 (Woodoku, Blockudoku) or 10x10 (1010!).
- The pieces: three at a time in most games, in shapes of one to nine squares, like lines, squares and L shapes. They usually cannot be rotated.
- Clearing: full rows and columns disappear. In Sudoku-style games, full 3x3 squares clear too.
- Scoring: points for placing blocks and more for clearing, with bonuses for clearing several lines at once and for clearing on consecutive turns.
- Game over: when none of the pieces in your tray fits on the board.
Block puzzle vs Tetris
Block puzzles are often compared with Tetris, but they play very differently:

The main types
Our study of the top 100 block puzzles on Google Play found four kinds under the same label:
- Classic grid (83 of 100): Block Blast!, BlockPuz, Block Crush! and most of the top.
- Sudoku-style: Woodoku, Blockudoku and Playdoku add 3x3 squares that clear.
- Jam and slide puzzles (13 of 100): you slide blocks out of the board, like Color Block Jam. The newest trend: 6 of the 13 top-100 block puzzles from 2025 are this kind.
- Merge and jigsaw hybrids (4 of 100): X2 Blocks merges numbers; others add picture puzzles.
A short history
Tetris (1984) made falling-block puzzles a classic. The drag-and-drop block puzzle without falling pieces became popular on phones with 1010!, released on Google Play in 2014 and still updated today. Wood-styled versions followed, then Sudoku-style boards (Blockudoku in 2019, Woodoku in 2020), and in 2022 Block Blast!, which has since passed a billion installs on Google Play.

Is Block Blast like Tetris?
