AFK stands for away from keyboard. An AFK game is a game that keeps playing, and keeps rewarding you, while you are away. On mobile the term usually means an AFK RPG: you collect a team of heroes, they fight through stages on their own, and rewards pile up in a chest until you come back to collect them.
AFK vs idle: every AFK game is an idle game, but not every idle game is an AFK game. On mobile, "AFK" almost always means a hero-collecting idle RPG; "idle" also covers tycoons, clickers and incremental games.
Where does AFK come from?
AFK is old internet slang. Players typed it in chats in the 1990s and 2000s to say they were stepping away from the computer. In online games, being AFK usually meant your character stood still, and in competitive games it was frowned upon.
Idle games turned it around: being away became the point. The term went mainstream in mobile games with Lilith Games' AFK Arena, a hero-collecting idle RPG with more than 10 million installs on Google Play, and its successor AFK Journey, and it has been part of game titles ever since. In our study of 847 idle games on Google Play, 26 had AFK in their title.
How an AFK game works
- A team of heroes that you collect, level and arrange in a formation.
- Campaign stages your team fights through automatically.
- AFK rewards: gold, experience and items that build up while you are away, collected from a chest or a reward screen, usually up to a time limit.
- Summoning: new heroes come from random draws, which is where most AFK games make their money.
- Side modes such as towers, arenas and guild bosses, each with daily attempts.
The design goal is short, frequent sessions: open the game, collect the rewards, upgrade, push a stage or two, close it again.

Notice the last column. Big hero collectors usually skip ads entirely and earn from summons and passes instead, which also means their in-app purchase ranges go high: up to $299.99 an item for AFK Arena and Mythic Heroes. Our study of idle games found the same pattern across the genre.
AFK games without heavy gacha
Not every idle RPG is a hero collector. Our own two keep the AFK part and change the rest:
- Idle Ronin: Cyber RPG replays your squad's fight for up to 8 hours while you are away, clearing stages and picking up Unit Cores. New cyborgs come from boss drops rather than paid summons.
- Idle Summoner: Pixel RPG builds your team through a summoning chain paid with gold earned in play, and pays you for up to 24 hours away.
Are AFK games good?
They are good at one thing: fitting a satisfying RPG into five minutes a few times a day. If you like building a team and watching it grow without grinding, they are a great fit. Away from keyboard. In idle games it means progress that continues while you are not playing.
Is AFK Arena an idle game?
Yes. It is an idle RPG: your heroes collect rewards while you are away and battles run automatically.
Do AFK games work offline?
Many big AFK RPGs need a connection, because your heroes and rewards are stored on the game's servers. Smaller idle RPGs, including ours, often run offline.
How long can you be AFK in an AFK game?
Each game has a cap on how long rewards keep building up, often somewhere between 8 and 24 hours. Idle Ronin counts 8 hours (12 with the Cyber Card), Idle Summoner 24.
