What Makes a Good Mobile RPG? 10 Things We Look For
Ten things that separate great mobile RPGs from the rest: respect for your time, fair spending, touch controls, offline play, cloud save and more, from a studio that makes RPGs for phones.
A good mobile RPG respects the fact that it is played on a phone: in short sessions, with one hand, sometimes offline, often between other things. The best ones combine that with the heart of any RPG: growth you can feel and choices that matter. Here are the ten things we look for, and that we try to get right in our own games.
The short checklist: it respects your time, it is fair to free players, it plays well on a touch screen, and it keeps your progress safe.
1. It respects your time
A mobile RPG should work in five-minute sessions and reward longer ones. Idle and auto-battle features help: in our Idle Ronin, your squad keeps fighting for up to 8 hours while you are away.
2. It is fair to free players
Everything important should be reachable without paying. Check the store page: a top in-app price in the hundreds, energy walls and paid-only heroes are warning signs. See how free mobile games make money.
3. The ads are optional or rare
Rewarded videos you choose are fine. Ads after every fight are not. In our games, a forced ad can never appear in the first 3 minutes of a session or within 3 minutes of another one.
4. It is built for touch
Menus you can reach with a thumb, buttons big enough to hit, and fights that do not need precise timing on glass.
5. It works offline
The core game should play on a plane or a train. Online features can wait for a connection.
6. It keeps your progress safe
Cloud save through Google Play Games or an account, so a new phone does not mean starting over. See how to transfer game progress.
7. Your choices matter
Team building, skill choices, gear and when to rebirth should change how things go. If the only choice is "tap upgrade", the RPG part is missing. In Idle Ronin, owning four units of one set multiplies each member's ATK by 8, so who you field really matters.
8. Progress you can feel
Growth should be visible: stronger heroes, new areas, new systems. The best RPGs keep revealing something new every few days.
9. It runs well and does not overheat
Smooth on mid-range phones, gentle on the battery. See how to fix lag and overheating in games.
10. It is alive
Regular updates, fixes and events show that someone cares. Check the Updated on date on the store page.
How our RPGs measure up
We hold our own games to this list. Idle Ronin and Idle Summoner play offline, keep progress in the cloud, limit forced ads and pay you for time away. They are free with ads and optional purchases (top items at $37.99 and $74.99 on Google Play in the US), and they are new, so judge for yourself.
