Google Play Pre-Registration Explained: How It Works and What You Get

What pre-registering for a game on Google Play does, whether it costs anything, what happens on launch day, how to cancel, and why developers offer pre-registration rewards.

Pre-registering on Google Play means telling Google you want a game that is not out yet. It costs nothing, and when the game launches, Google Play sends you a notification so you can install it; if the developer allows it and you opted in, Google Play can even install it for you automatically on launch day. Many games also give pre-registered players a small in-game reward.

In short: free, no commitment, a notification (or automatic install) on launch day, and often a launch reward.

How to pre-register

Google's steps on Android:

Open the Google Play Store app.
Tap the game you want to pre-register for.
On its page, tap Install (for an unreleased game, this pre-registers you).

Google says plainly: you won't be charged when you pre-register.

What happens on launch day

You get a notification from Google Play when the game becomes available to download. Developers can also make their game eligible for automatic installation, so players who opt in get it on their device on launch day without doing anything.

How to cancel a pre-registration

Open the Google Play app.
Search for the game.
Tap Pre-registered, then Cancel.

Why developers use pre-registration

From our side as developers, pre-registration does two things. It shows how much interest a game has before launch, and it gives the game a strong first day, because everyone who pre-registered hears about it at once. That is why many games offer pre-registration rewards: extra currency, a skin or a hero for everyone who signs up before launch, often more as the number of pre-registrations grows.

Is pre-registering worth it?

Usually yes: it is free, it reminds you when the game is out, and rewards are a nice start. Two things to keep in mind:

Rewards are usually delivered in the game, sometimes only if you install and sign in within a certain time after launch. Read the game's announcement.
Auto-install uses data and space. If you opt in, the game downloads on launch day; make sure you have room.
