Some of the best things you can play on an Android phone this year came out years ago and are still updated, and some of 2026's best releases are small premium games you will not see in the top charts. So instead of one ranked list, here are our picks by what you are looking for, with the facts that matter on every game: what it costs, whether it has ads, and how players rate it.

We are a small Android game studio, and we play a lot of other people's games. For this list we started from games that are widely praised and still actively updated, then checked every one on Google Play in the US on September 25, 2026: that it is available, what it costs, whether the store page says Contains ads, the range of its in-app purchases, its rating and its install count. Those numbers are in the tables, so you can judge for yourself.

Two more things you should know. Nobody paid to be on this list, and we make games ourselves. Our own games are not ranked against anyone; they have their own clearly marked section near the end.

A note on ratings: Google Play ratings mix opinions about the game with opinions about its business model, so big free-to-play games, especially gacha games, often score lower than their quality suggests. We mention it where it matters.

Best new mobile games of 2026

2026 has been a strong year for Android, with big free-to-play launches and a wave of excellent premium ports. These arrived on Google Play this year (the date is when they appeared on the US store):

Arknights: Endfield is the biggest new RPG of the year on Android: a 3D real-time strategy RPG from Hypergryph, the studio behind Arknights, with more than 5 million installs and a 4.59 rating. NTE: Neverness to Everness, a supernatural open-world RPG set in a modern city, followed in April with similar numbers.

Rainbow Six Mobile brought Ubisoft's tactical 5v5 attack-and-defend shooter to phones and passed 10 million installs, and The Division Resurgence turned The Division into an open-world shooter RPG. Pokémon Champions is the easiest way to play proper Pokémon battles on a phone, ranked or casual.

On the premium side, Tomb Raider is Lara Croft's complete origin adventure adapted for Android by Feral Interactive, Slime Rancher and Subnautica: Below Zero are faithful ports of two much-loved PC games, and Servant of the Lake is a new point-and-click puzzle from Rusty Lake. For more new games, keep an eye on smaller releases like Card Crawl 2 (a solitaire dungeon crawler), RogueSlide (a sliding-puzzle roguelike), Crawl Tactics (turn-based tactics with roguelike runs) and Goblin Sushi (a restaurant roguelike where goblins roll sushi).

One trend worth knowing: several of 2026's premium games are free to try. Monument Valley 3 lets you play its first two chapters for free, Tiny Bookshop its first three days, and DROVA its first area, before a single purchase unlocks the rest.

Free games are paid for by ads or purchases, so the best free games are the ones that are fun without either. These are free to download and play, and none of them carries the Contains ads label:

The surest way to avoid ads is to pay once. These premium games have no ads and, with a few small exceptions, nothing more to buy:

Stardew Valley is our pick here: $4.99 buys hundreds of hours of farming, fishing, mining and village life, with every update included. Bloons TD 6 does sell extras, but the base game is complete without them.

Best offline mobile games 2026

Every game in the no-ads list above plays offline, and so do these. Google tags most of them as Offline on their store page; Stardew Valley and Balatro are not tagged, but both are single-player games that need no connection once installed.

Best mobile RPGs of 2026

The big free-to-play RPGs look and play like console games, and they are funded by gacha: you spend currency on random draws for characters. Their Play ratings are dragged down by that, not by the games themselves.
