Idle Ronin Beginner's Guide: Bosses, Upgrades and Rebirth

New to Idle Ronin: Cyber RPG? Learn how auto battle, bosses and unit upgrades work, what unlocks at which stage and when to do your first Rebirth.

In Idle Ronin: Cyber RPG your Ronin and a squad of cyborg units fight on their own, even while the game is closed. Your job is to make the right calls: which units to upgrade, when to take on a boss and when to start over stronger. This guide covers your first days.

How auto battle works in Idle Ronin

At the start you pick your first cyborg: K-9 Sentinel, who hits hard and shreds bosses, or Neko-X, who is faster and finds more gold. From then on the fighting is automatic. Your Ronin attacks on a steady rhythm, and each hit deals the combined ATK of your active units.

Every stage has 10 waves and the tenth is a boss. Beaten enemies drop gold, and you can speed things up:

  • Tap the glowing skill buttons to fire each unit's active skill. Hold a button to read what it does without casting it.
  • From stage 4, a drone sometimes flies across the battlefield. Tap it for a burst of gold.
  • From stage 20, Treasure Chests can appear among normal enemies and pay 10 times the gold of a normal kill.

Boss fights and the boss timer

A boss has to go down before the boss timer runs out. The timer starts at 30 seconds, and the Chrono Guardian and Boss Timer equipment extend it later. If the boss survives, you lose nothing: the game keeps you on the last wave, farming gold. Upgrade your units, then press FIGHT BOSS to try again.

Bosses on stages ending in 4 or 9 have noticeably more health than the others, so that is where most walls happen. The boss of every 5th stage (5, 10, 15 and so on) drops a Unit Core, which activates a random cyborg. On new stages that drop is guaranteed.

Upgrading units and skills

Gold goes into unit upgrades. Each unit row shows its ATK, the upgrade cost and how much ATK the next upgrade adds, so compare those numbers and spend where the gain is biggest.

  • Five upgrades raise a unit by one level and give it one skill point.
  • Each unit has one active skill and three passives. Most units have a Protocol passive that raises their own ATK, a safe first pick for skill points.
  • Every 50 levels a unit gets an extra ATK multiplier: x2 at level 50, x4 at level 100, and it keeps climbing.
  • In Settings you can switch the upgrade button between x1, x5 and MAX, which spends all your gold.
  • Only 6 units fight at once. When you own 7 or more, the Reorder button lets you choose who is active.

What unlocks at which stage

  • Stage 3: daily quests, the 7-day login calendar and a free supply drop every 4 hours
  • Stage 5: the Cyber Pass
  • Stage 10: Dungeons (Gold Vault, Crystal Mine and Core Factory)
  • Stage 15: the Neon Tower
  • Stage 40: the Neon Sakura skin becomes free in the shop's SKINS section
  • Stage 50: Rebirth, and after your first Rebirth, Guardians
  • Stage 65: Side-Jobs, which pay gold, diamonds and Refine Crystals
  • Stage 80: Equipment crafting, with more slots at stages 100, 150, 200 and 500 and set bonuses from stage 125

New units join the Unit Core pool at stages 21, 40, 90 and 125, and Achievements open with the first one you clear. Grab the free skin at stage 40: every skin you own beyond the first adds 10% ATK to all your units.

When to Rebirth in Idle Ronin, and why

Rebirth unlocks at stage 50. It sends you back to stage 1 and resets your gold, unit levels and skills. You keep your units and their duplicates, Guardians, equipment, skins and diamonds, and you receive Rebirth Tokens.

Every Rebirth Token you hold adds 10% ATK to all of your units. Tokens also summon and upgrade Guardians, who give permanent boosts such as extra ATK for a whole unit set, faster skills, a longer boss timer or more gold. Tokens spent on Guardians no longer add ATK, so spend them on purpose.

The token reward grows with the stage you reach: 5 tokens at stage 50, one more for every 10 stages after that, a bonus for the total level of your units, and faster growth from stage 100 on. The game's own advice is right: rebirth when progress slows down and upgrades no longer get you past the next boss. After your first Rebirth your Ronin dashes straight through enemies it can take down in one hit, so the early stages fly by.

Offline earnings, daily rewards and cloud save

Your squad keeps fighting while you are away. When you return after at least a few minutes, you collect the gold it earned, and if it is strong enough it also clears stages and picks up Unit Cores. Offline earnings count for up to 8 hours, and passives like Offline Cable raise the gold.

From stage 3, check the DAILY screen every day. The login calendar builds up to day 7, which gives 150 diamonds and 6 Unit Cores, and missing a day does not reset it. Six daily quests fill a chest when you claim them all, and weekly quests add more. The login reward and the supply drop need an internet connection.

Finally, sign in with Google Play Games. Your progress is then backed up to your Google account automatically, and on a new phone or after a reinstall the game offers to load the cloud save when it is further ahead. Signing in also puts you on the weekly Neon Tower ranking. Find out more on the Idle Ronin: Cyber RPG.
