Idle Ronin Best Cyborg Squads: Set Bonuses and Skills Explained

How cyborg units, squads and set bonuses work in Idle Ronin, what each skill type does, and how to build the strongest squad from the units you own.

All 23 cyborg units you can get from Unit Cores in Idle Ronin start with the same base ATK and the same upgrade costs, so no unit is simply better on paper. What sets them apart is their squad, their skills and how many copies you own.

How units, Unit Cores and duplicates work

Unit Cores drop from the boss of every 5th stage and also come from the Core Factory, quests, the Cyber Pass and tower rewards. Each core activates a random cyborg from the pool your best stage allows: six units at the start, with more joining at stages 21, 40, 90 and 125.

A duplicate adds a stack, and every extra copy adds 0.7x ATK to that unit (1x for Binary Set units).
Only 6 units fight at once: pick them with the Reorder button (from 7 units) and save lineups with Edit Team (from 10 units).
Only active units fire their active skills and apply their passives.
From stage 5 the core screen shows a FEATURED THIS WEEK unit. Every core has a 12% chance to become it, and it is guaranteed within 30 cores.

Idle Ronin set bonuses explained

Every unit belongs to a squad set. The more different units of one set you own, the bigger the ATK multiplier for every unit in it. The count includes your reserve, so a benched unit still powers up its squad mates.

1 unit: x1
2 units: x2
3 units: x4
4 units: x8
5 units: x16 (only the Street Unit Set has five members)
Binary Set: x6 once you own both units

The six sets:

Street Unit Set: K-9 Sentinel, Neko-X, Byte, Echo, Ghost Unit
Bio Unit Set: Hopper V, Stallion, Pando, Bastion
Hunter Unit Set: Oni Prime, Raptor, Jaws, Lycan
Titan Set: Colossus, Grizzly-X, Leviathan, Watchtower
Worker Set: Rivet, Forge, Welder, Hauler
Binary Set: Null, One

Active vs passive skills

Each unit has one active skill, the button you tap, and three passives that work all the time once they have points. A unit earns one skill point per level (every 5 upgrades), and passives start unlearned.

For most units the first passive is a Protocol that raises the unit's own ATK. Core Protocol (Street and Bio units) gives +20%, then +10% per level. Hunter Protocol (Hunter and Titan units) gives +25%, then +15% per level. Death Code (Null) gives +25%, then +20% per level. Worker units have Worker Protocol, a gold bonus, and One has Life Code for Rebirth Tokens.

Which skills do what: damage, bosses, gold and offline

Damage: Heavy Hit (K-9 Sentinel, next attack +800%), Power Fist (Pando, next 5 attacks +100%), Powersurge (Jaws, +300% own ATK for 10 seconds), Sonic Blast (Oni Prime, whole Hunter Unit Set +100% for 10 seconds) and Full Moon (Null, whole Binary Set +100% for 10 seconds). Street Network (Ghost Unit) raises every Street unit's ATK.
Crits and speed: base crit chance is 4% and a crit deals 2x damage. Target Lock (Raptor) and Huge Impact (Grizzly-X) give crit bursts, Rapid Attack (Neko-X) doubles attack speed for 10 attacks, and passives like Lucky Seven, Weak Spot and Fast Reflex add more.
Bosses: Claw Strike (Lycan) hits for +500% and doubles that against bosses, and Boss Killer (K-9 Sentinel, Lycan) adds 4% boss damage per level. For normal waves: Ground Slam (Colossus), Monster Killer (Jaws, Colossus) and Suffer (Null).
Gold: Richie Rich (Neko-X, Hopper V, Leviathan), Prosperity (One), Fortune (Byte, Bastion, Rivet, a chance of 10x gold), Midas Touch (Bastion), Easter Egg (Hopper V, all gold +100% for 20 seconds) and Steal Gold (Watchtower). For Treasure Chests: Chest Caller (Leviathan), Tracking and Treasure Hunter (Echo).
Offline: Offline Cable (Watchtower, Forge) adds 15% offline gold per level.
Rebirth: Long Service (Bastion, Jaws, Colossus, Hauler) and Life Code (One) add Rebirth Tokens, and Fast Forward (Ghost Unit) starts your next run at a later stage.
Tempo: Automatron (Byte) casts your active skills and levels your units every second for 20 seconds, Hyperdrive (Stallion) makes other skills recharge twice as fast for 15 seconds, and Mimic Protocol (Echo) copies your last active skill.
Upkeep: Low Maintenance (Byte, Pando), Maintenance Crew (Pando, Bio Unit Set) and Assembly Line (Welder, Worker Set) cut upgrade costs, up to 80% in total.

How to build the best Idle Ronin squad

Since every unit starts equal, multipliers decide everything. Going from 3 to 4 units of one set doubles every member's ATK, from x4 to x8. So:

Early on, the Bio Unit Set is your first x8, since all four members are in the pool from the start. Fill the other two slots with your starter and Byte, who share the Street Unit Set.
From stage 21, Neko-X, K-9 Sentinel and Echo join the pool and the Street Unit Set can reach x8 too. With two x8 sets for six slots, bench the lowest-ATK members: they still count toward their set.
From stage 40, the Hunter Unit Set and Titan Set open up. Hunter Protocol grows faster per point than Core Protocol, and Sonic Blast boosts the whole Hunter Unit Set.
From stage 125, Null and One form the Binary Set (x6, with stronger stacking), and the rare Ghost Unit can appear. It is the only way to the x16 Street Unit Set.
Worker units have no ATK Protocol, so treat them as support picks for gold, crafting and Side-Jobs.
Choose utility units that sit in a strong set, like Stallion for Hyperdrive or Byte for Automatron. They still hit at their full set multiplier.
Trust the numbers. Each unit's ATK already includes its set bonus, stacks and skills, so after a swap, check your total ATK at the top of the screen.

Guardians push this further: Ares (Street), Cupid (Bio), Artemis (Hunter), Atlas (Titan), Foreman (Worker) and Luna (Binary) each add 100% ATK per level to their set, so pick the one that matches your main squad.
