What Is a Roguelike? Roguelike vs Roguelite on Mobile, Explained

A roguelike is a game of random runs and permanent death, named after Rogue (1980). What counts as a roguelike, how roguelites and survivors-likes differ, and the best examples on Android.

A roguelike is a game built on runs: each attempt takes you through randomly generated levels, and when you die, you start over from the beginning. The name comes from Rogue, a dungeon game made in 1980. Today the word covers a whole family of games, from strict turn-based dungeon crawlers to fast action games that let you keep some upgrades between runs, which are called roguelites.

Roguelike vs roguelite: in a roguelike, death resets everything. In a roguelite, you keep some progress between runs, like permanent upgrades or unlocked characters. Most mobile "roguelikes" are roguelites.

Where the name comes from

Rogue was created in 1980 by Glenn Wichman and Michael Toy, students at UC Santa Cruz. It drew its dungeon with text characters, generated a new one every game, and killed your character for good. Games that copied that recipe became "Rogue-like", and the name stuck.

In 2008, developers at the International Roguelike Development Conference in Berlin tried to pin the term down. Their list, known as the Berlin Interpretation, names factors such as random level generation, permanent death, turn-based and grid-based movement, resource management and exploration. Few modern games tick every box, which is why new words appeared.

The survivors-like is the newest branch: you fight wave after wave of enemies while random power-ups stack into a build. Vampire Survivors made it famous, and dozens of mobile games followed.

Why roguelikes work so well on phones

  • Short, self-contained runs fit a commute or a break.
  • Endless variety: random levels and random upgrades make every run different.
  • Offline by nature: most single-player roguelikes need no connection.
  • The one-more-run pull: a run that ended close to victory makes you want to try again right away.

Roguelikes and idle games

The two genres borrow from each other. Idle games took the run-and-reset idea as prestige: you start over stronger, just like a roguelite keeps permanent upgrades. Some games combine them directly, such as Rogue with the Dead, a roguelike idle strategy game. Our Idle Ronin is not a roguelike, but its rebirth works on the same principle: each run makes the next one faster. See prestige, rebirth and ascension.
