Why Do Mobile Games Need Internet? (And Which Ones Don't)

Even single-player mobile games often ask for a connection. The real reasons, from server saves and anti-cheat to ads and clock checks, and how to find games that play fully offline.
Mobile games need internet for one of seven reasons: your progress lives on the game's servers, you play against other people, the game checks for cheating, it shows ads, it sells things, it runs live events, or it checks the real time before paying rewards. A game that needs none of these can run fully offline, and many do.
Quick check: if a game has multiplayer, a shop with random draws or daily events, expect it to need a connection. Single-player puzzle, idle, strategy and premium games usually do not.
The seven reasons games go online

1. Your progress lives on a server
Big online games, especially RPGs with gacha, keep your characters and items on their own servers. The phone only shows you what the server says. That protects your account from cheating and lets you play on several devices, but it means no connection, no game.
2. You are playing with other people
Anything with PvP, co-op, guilds or trading needs a connection. There is no way around it: the other players are somewhere else.
3. Anti-cheat
When progress affects other players, through rankings, leagues or trading, games must stop cheaters. Checking results on a server is the reliable way, so many games refuse to run their competitive parts offline.
4. Ads
Free games show ads, and ads are downloaded when they are shown. Offline, a free game simply shows no ads. Some games respond by requiring a connection to play at all, which is annoying, but it is the reason.
5. Purchases
Every purchase in a Google Play game goes through Google Play's billing, which needs a connection. Offline, the shop is usually closed while the rest of the game keeps working.
6. Live events and new content
Games that change every week (new events, rotating shops, seasons) download that content from a server. Offline, you keep playing what you already have.
7. Time checks
This one surprises players. If a game pays a reward every day or every few hours, it cannot trust the phone's clock, because anyone could move it forward and collect a month of rewards in a minute. So it checks the time online before paying. Our Idle Ronin works this way: the daily login reward and the 4-hour supply drop wait for a connection when the game cannot confirm the time, and everything else, including offline earnings, keeps working.
Games that play fully offline
Single-player games that keep everything on your phone need no connection for the game itself. In our studies of Google Play, Google tags 41% of idle games and 77% of the most popular block puzzles as Offline. Premium games are usually offline too. FAQ
Why does a single-player game need internet?
Usually for ads, purchases, time checks for daily rewards, or because its progress is stored on a server to prevent cheating. Some games need it only on the first launch to download content.
Do games use a lot of data?
Most gameplay uses very little. Downloads and updates are what use data, so update on Wi-Fi.
Can I play online games offline?
Not the online parts. Some online games have offline modes, but multiplayer, server-side progress and live events need a connection.
