Idle vs Incremental vs Clicker Games: What's the Difference?
Clicker games reward tapping, idle games play themselves, and incremental games keep unlocking new layers. What each term really means, where they overlap, and examples of each on Android.
The three words describe three sides of the same genre. A clicker game is about tapping to earn. An idle game is about earning without you, even while it is closed. An incremental game is about numbers that keep growing and systems that keep unlocking. Most games in the genre are all three at once, which is why the words get mixed up.
Quick guide: if you mostly tap, it is a clicker. If you mostly wait and decide, it is an idle game. If the game keeps revealing new layers of rules, it is an incremental game.
The three terms side by side
| Clicker | Idle | Incremental | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you do | tap or click to earn | set things up and let them run | unlock and combine new systems |
| Progress while away | little or none | the main feature | varies |
| Typical session | active, a few minutes | a quick check-in | long thinking sessions |
| Classic examples | Cookie Clicker, Tap Titans 2 | AdVenture Capitalist, Idle Miner Tycoon | Antimatter Dimensions, Kittens Game |
What is a clicker game?
A clicker game gives you something for every tap: a cookie, a coin, a hit on a monster. In the first minutes, tapping is your whole income. Then you buy helpers that tap for you, and the game gradually turns idle. Cookie Clicker, released in 2013, made the format famous, and its official Android version calls itself "the original idle game". On phones, tap RPGs like Tap Titans 2 and Clicker Heroes made tapping on monsters the standard.
Clickers are also where the genre's first design problem shows. Tapping all day is not fun, so every good clicker quickly gives you ways to stop tapping.
What is an idle game?
An idle game keeps making progress when you are not playing, and pays you for the time away when you come back. Its fun is in planning rather than doing: you decide what to upgrade and when, and the game does the work. Tycoons such as AdVenture Capitalist and Idle Miner Tycoon, and idle RPGs such as AFK Arena, are idle games first. Our three idle games work this way: in Idle Ronin your squad keeps fighting for up to 8 hours while you are away. We explain the whole genre in idle games explained.
What is an incremental game?
Incremental is the broadest term, and the one fans of the genre's depth prefer. An incremental game is built on accumulating resources and gradually unlocking more: new buildings, new currencies, new rules, sometimes whole new layers of the game. Wikipedia defines the genre by exactly that, the incremental accumulation of resources through repetition or automation.
The purest incremental games are minimal and text-heavy, and many grew out of browser games. Kittens Game has you run a village of kittens with more than 30 buildings and hundreds of technologies. Antimatter Dimensions starts as a simple counter and ends up stacking layer after layer of prestige. A Dark Room starts in a dark room with a fire, and turns into something else entirely.
Where the terms overlap
Most games fit more than one label, and that is normal:
- Idle clickers start with tapping and move to automation. Tap Titans 2 and Idle Slayer are both.
- Idle incrementals run on their own and keep adding systems. Cell to Singularity, which grows from a single cell to modern technology, is a good example.
- Idle RPGs borrow the loop but put a battle on top of it. Our guide to idle RPGs covers them.
In our study of 847 idle games on Google Play, 81.8% had "idle" in their title and 5.4% had "clicker", while "incremental" barely appears in titles at all. On mobile, idle is the word that sells.
Games with an ending
One difference that matters to many players: most idle and clicker games are endless, while some incremental games have a real ending. Universal Paperclips, where you play an AI that only wants to make paperclips, and A Dark Room both end, and both are on Google Play as small paid games with no ads.
Which one should you play?
| If you like | Try |
|---|---|
| short, active sessions | a clicker such as Tap Titans 2 or Idle Slayer |
| checking in a few times a day | an idle game such as Idle Miner Tycoon, or our Idle AI Factory |
| thinking, maths and discovery | an incremental game such as Antimatter Dimensions or Kittens Game |
| a story with an ending | Universal Paperclips or A Dark Room |
| battles and heroes | an idle RPG such as our Idle Ronin or Idle Summoner |
FAQ
Are idle and incremental games the same?
Mostly, and the terms are often used for the same games. Idle stresses progress without you; incremental stresses numbers and systems that grow. Many fans use incremental for the deeper, more complex end of the genre.
Is Cookie Clicker an idle game?
Yes. It starts as a clicker, becomes an idle game once you buy buildings, and its prestige system (ascension) makes it an incremental game too. That mix is why it is the model for the genre.
What was the first incremental game?
Progress Quest, released in 2002, is usually called the first. The genre took off in 2013 with Cookie Clicker, Candy Box! and A Dark Room.
