What Is an Idle RPG? Meaning, Types and How to Play

What idle and AFK RPGs are, the main types with examples, how offline progress and the upgrade and rebirth loop work, whether they are pay-to-win, and how much time an idle RPG really needs.

An idle RPG is a role-playing game that keeps going when you stop playing. Your heroes fight on their own, rewards pile up over time, and your job is to make good choices between sessions rather than to react fast. That is why the genre is also called AFK RPG: away from keyboard, or in this case away from your phone.

In one sentence: an idle RPG is an RPG where combat and income run automatically, even while the game is closed, and you decide what to upgrade, which heroes to use and when to reset for a permanent boost.

This guide explains how idle RPGs work, using our two Android games as examples: Idle Ronin: Cyber RPG, a cyberpunk idle RPG with cyborg units and a 300-floor Neon Tower, and Idle Summoner: Pixel RPG, a pixel art idle RPG built around monster summoning and rebirth.

What is an idle RPG?

Most idle RPGs share the same shape. Combat runs automatically: in Idle Ronin your Ronin slashes through waves of mechs by itself, and in Idle Summoner the monsters you place in your battle slots attack castles without any input. What you control is the build: which units you recruit, what you upgrade and when you reset for a bigger boost.

The RPG part is the growth. Numbers climb from tiny to enormous, new units and skills unlock, and walls that stopped you yesterday fall today. The idle part is the pacing. You can play in short bursts, and time away still counts.

Idle RPG, AFK RPG, clicker RPG: the main types

The labels overlap, and stores use them loosely. These are the kinds of idle RPGs you will meet on Android:

TypeHow it playsExamples
Hero collector, often called AFK RPGbuild a team from dozens of heroes, mostly through summoningAFK Arena, Idle Heroes
Single-hero idle RPGone main character fights automatically, and you upgrade it and its helpersLegend of Slime, Idle Ronin
Clicker RPGyou tap to attack at first, then heroes and pets take overTap Titans 2, Clicker Heroes
Idle skilling RPGyou train skills such as mining or fishing alongside combatMelvor Idle, IdleOn
Monster summoneryou summon and upgrade monsters that fight for youIdle Summoner

The difference between idle and AFK is mostly marketing. Both mean the game plays itself while you are away; AFK RPG is the name hero collectors made popular. Our guide to AFK games looks at that label in more detail.

Where idle RPGs came from

Idle RPGs grew out of clicker games. Clicker Heroes (2014 in the browser, 2015 on phones) and Tap Titans 2 (December 2016) turned tapping into an RPG with heroes, bosses and prestige. Idle Heroes (2016) and the hero collectors that followed brought gacha summoning into the loop, and AFK Arena made "AFK" a genre label. The 2020s added new mixes such as IdleOn (2020) and Legend of Slime (2022). Our history of idle games tells the whole story.

How offline progress works in idle games

Offline progress is the heart of the genre. The game notes when you left, and when you return it works out what you earned in the meantime and pays it out, usually in one go. The rules differ from game to game, so it helps to know yours:

  • Idle Summoner pays a welcome-back gold reward when you have been away for more than an hour, based on your current stage and counted for up to 24 hours. Territories you captured in invasions add their own share for the time away.
  • Idle Ronin has offline earnings too, so your Ronin keeps fighting and earning while the game is closed.

Many idle games cap how much offline time they count. With a 24-hour cap, as in Idle Summoner, opening the game once a day is enough to waste nothing. Our guide to offline earnings compares the rules of many games.

The core loop: upgrade, rebirth, collect

Under the surface, idle RPGs run on three loops that feed each other:

  • Upgrade: spend what you earn to hit harder, which lets you earn faster. In Idle Summoner that means summoning higher monsters and levelling them with gold. In Idle Ronin it means upgrading your attack, skills and cyborg units.
  • Rebirth, also called prestige: reset your run in exchange for a permanent bonus. Idle Summoner turns the stage you reach into player levels, each worth +1% damage, and class ranks up to Master. Rebirth in Idle Ronin unlocks permanent bonuses, equipment, guardians and side jobs.
  • Collect: build a collection that makes future runs stronger. Idle Summoner has a 55-monster Monster Book that you fill through invasions. In Idle Ronin you recruit dozens of cyborg units by opening Unit Cores.

Bosses and towers work as checkpoints. Both games put a clock on boss fights, and both have a tower to climb: the Neon Tower in Idle Ronin has 300 floors and a weekly ranking, while the Tower of Infinity in Idle Summoner pays you for every floor you break in 60 seconds. For the mechanics in more depth, see how idle RPGs work and our explainer on prestige and rebirth.

Idle RPG vs classic RPG

A classic RPG asks for your attention: you steer every fight, explore and follow a story. An idle RPG asks for your judgment instead: the fights run without you, and the game is about building a stronger team and choosing the right moment to reset. Many players keep one of each, a big RPG for the evening and an idle RPG for the minutes in between. We compare the two side by side in idle RPG vs classic RPG.

Are idle RPGs pay-to-win?

Most idle RPGs are free to play and earn money from ads and in-app purchases. Whether spending decides who wins depends on the game. Hero collectors often sell summons with random results, while other games sell time savers or cosmetics. Three quick checks help: look at the price range of in-app purchases on the store page, check whether the game publishes its drop rates, and see whether it has a pity rule that guarantees rare results after a number of tries. Our guide to gacha, pity and drop rates explains what to look for, and our list of F2P-friendly idle games has picks that respect free players.

Our own games are free with ads and optional purchases. Idle Summoner's shop, for example, sells permanent boosts such as +10% summon chance, while rebirth, invasions and the whole Monster Book are open to every player without paying.

Best way to play idle games: tips to progress faster

  • Spread your upgrades. Costs usually rise with every level, as they do for monster levels in Idle Summoner, so several cheap upgrades often beat one expensive one.
  • Do not fear the reset. The first rebirth feels like losing everything, but the permanent bonus is what makes long-term growth possible.
  • Time your resets. Check what a rebirth gives before you take it. In Idle Summoner the damage gain equals how far your stage is above your player level, so a rebirth right after the last one is worth little.
  • Spend capped resources before they fill up. Idle Summoner's Battle Points hold five and refill one every five minutes. In Idle Ronin the Gold Vault, Crystal Mine and Core Factory dungeons refill every day with keys.
  • Claim daily rewards. They add up: Idle Summoner's Daily bonus runs on a 10-day cycle that resets at 00:00 GMT, and Idle Ronin has daily and weekly quests and login rewards.
  • Back up your progress. Both games offer cloud save, so a new phone does not mean starting over.

Our list of idle game tips has more, and our guide to breaking through a progression wall helps when you are stuck.

How much time does an idle RPG need?

Less than you might think. A typical day can look like this:

  • One or two check-ins of a few minutes to collect offline rewards, spend currency and start the next push.
  • A short active session when you feel like it, for boss fights, towers or invasions where your taps and skills matter.
  • A longer look now and then, when a rebirth is due and you want to plan the next run.

Idle RPGs reward regular visits more than long sessions. Because offline rewards are capped and daily resources refill, checking in once or twice a day usually gets you further than one long session a week.

Offline idle RPGs on Android: where to start

If you want an offline idle RPG on Android, look for three things: progress that continues while the game is closed, a core game that runs without a connection, and cloud save for when you switch phones. Both of our idle RPGs tick those boxes. They are free to play with ads and optional in-app purchases, and they run on Android 8.0 or newer.

Pick Idle Ronin: Cyber RPG if you like neon cities, a lone hero backed by a cyborg squad, weekly tower climbs and daily dungeons. Pick Idle Summoner: Pixel RPG if you prefer pixel art, a push-your-luck summoning chain, castle sieges and rebirth with class ranks. For more choices, see our list of the best idle RPGs on Android.

Idle RPG FAQ

Are idle RPGs real games?

Yes. The fights run on their own, but the decisions are yours: what to build, what to upgrade and when to reset. Researchers have studied idle games as a genre of their own since at least 2018.

Do idle RPGs need an internet connection?

Some do and some do not. Many hero collectors need a connection for every session, while others, including Idle Ronin and Idle Summoner, run their core game offline. Our guide to playing Android games offline explains how to check.

What is the difference between an idle game and an idle RPG?

An idle game can be about anything, such as a factory or a bakery. An idle RPG adds RPG parts: heroes or monsters, fights, bosses, equipment and character growth. Our complete guide to idle games covers the whole genre.

Either way, the best way to play is the same: check in, make a few good choices and let time do the rest.
