ONI Snakes Beginner's Guide: Plates, Cells, the Core and DASH

Everything a new player needs in ONI Snakes: Armored Arena: why every plate is both your length and your armor, how cells, heat and the bare core work, how to dodge and ram with DASH, the controls on phone and PC, and the habits that win matches.

ONI Snakes: Armored Arena is a snake arena game with guns. Your snake grows by eating, like in any snake game, but every piece of its body is an armor plate, and rival snakes shoot those plates off. The short version of how to win: grow a little before you fight, shoot a rival's plates off and finish its bare core, dodge incoming bolts with DASH, and never let your head touch another snake.

We make ONI Snakes, so every number in this guide comes from the game's code.

Plates: your length and your armor

Every body part your snake grows is a plate. Plates are your length, your score in most modes and your health, all at once. You grow by eating the glowing food on the floor, and in most modes a snake that dies turns into food, so the richest meals lie where the fights were.

A bolt never kills an armored snake. Each bolt that lands knocks off 8% of the target's plates, at least 1 and at most 5, and they drop on the floor as food. That is why fighting is the fastest way to grow: the shooter usually eats what it knocked off. Three kinds of plates change the maths:

  • Reinforced plates: 14% of the plates you grow from food come out reinforced, up to 8 at a time. A reinforced plate soaks a hit before any plate is lost.
  • Charged plates: cells you pick up while your magazine is full become charged plates, up to 3. A charged plate explodes when it is shot off and hurts every snake close by.
  • Tail cuts: a bolt that lands in the rear half of a snake with 20 plates or more also cuts off 35% of the tail behind the hit, up to 12 extra plates.

Cells: your ammo

Charge cells are the magazine every shot draws on. You carry up to 6 and start every life with 3. Every 2 plates you grow earn a cell, every snake you hit drops one, and loose cells lie around the action for 14 seconds. A full magazine is 6 Blaster shots, about 18 Uzi bullets or 2 rockets.

With no cells left you can still fire, but each shot is paid with one of your own plates, and only while you have at least 6. DASH costs cells too, so an empty magazine also means no dodge.

The bare core

A snake that loses its last plate is not dead yet: it is a bare core. The core is 35% faster and has 7 seconds to eat its way back to 3 plates. If it makes it, it is armored again. If one more bolt hits it first, or its time runs out, it is destroyed, and the snake that stripped it gets the kill.

That gives you two ways to take a snake out:

  1. Strip it. Shoot its plates off, then hit the bare core once more.
  2. Make it crash. A snake whose head touches your body dies at once, however big and armored it is.

The same rule works against you. Touching another snake's body with your head, or touching the arena wall, ends your life at once. The wall glows red when your head comes close.

DASH: dodge and ram

DASH is the button that keeps you alive, and it does two things:

  • Tap it to dodge. Your snake hops sideways, and bolts pass through it from the hop until 0.3 seconds after. A dodge costs 1 cell, and the next one is ready 2.2 seconds later.
  • Hold it to ram. Holding DASH charges a ram, fully in 0.8 seconds, and letting go drives your snake forward. While it rams, crashing into another snake does not kill you: your head smashes through and knocks 2 to 5 extra plates off, more the longer you charged. A ram costs 2 cells.

Dodge when a shot is already in the air, not before. Bolts fly faster than a boosting snake, so you cannot outrun them, but a well-timed hop makes a whole volley miss.

Guns and heat

A new pilot starts without a gun. The Blaster, a twin-bolt all-rounder, is yours for free at rank 2, which takes about two matches, and five more guns open as your rank climbs: our weapons guide compares them.

Hold FIRE and your gun keeps shooting at its own rate. Every shot adds heat, and a gun at full heat overheats and locks for 1.4 seconds. Heat starts to fall 0.3 seconds after your last shot, so short bursts keep you firing longer. You do not need perfect aim: a shot snaps onto a snake within 12 degrees of where your head points.

BOOST makes your snake faster but burns length while you hold it, and it only works while your snake is long enough. Use it to escape, to reach a power-up first or to cut in front of a rival, not to cruise.

Tips for your first matches

  1. Grow before you fight. A snake with a handful of plates is one volley away from its core. Eat for the first half minute, then pick your fights.
  2. Keep a cell for DASH. Stop shooting at 1 cell unless the next shot finishes a snake.
  3. Finish what you strip. A bare core is fast and hungry. Chase it and land one more hit, or someone else takes your kill.
  4. Use your body as a wall. A snake that crashes into you is your kill, and one that dies inside your coil earns the Constrictor medal.
  5. Hunt the marked leader. Once the longest snake has 25 plates it is marked: every bolt on it knocks off 2 extra plates, and it drops 2 cells per hit.
  6. Shoot a runner's tail. A hit in the rear half of a long snake cuts off a chunk of tail that you can eat.
  7. A hit counts for 5 seconds. A rival you hit that crashes into anything within the next 5 seconds counts as your kill.
  8. Mind the wall. Turn away as soon as the edge glows red.
  9. Fight over the power-ups. Overdrive, Shield Bubble, Phantom and EMP wait at fixed spots in every arena; our arena guide says where and when.
  10. Stripped? Run to food. Use the core's extra speed to reach food, not to chase the snake that stripped you.

What a match pays

Every match pays XP and coins, even a bad one. XP is 40, plus a tenth of your score, 12 for every snake you stripped and finished, 8 for every snake that crashed into you, 2 for every plate you knocked off and 8 for every escape from the bare core, plus a place bonus: 60 for 1st, 40 for 2nd, 25 for 3rd and 10 for the rest of the top 10.

Coins are 35% of your score, plus 6 per stripped snake, 4 per crash kill and 1 per plate knocked off, doubled for 1st place, times 1.6 for 2nd and 1.4 for 3rd. Jackpot orbs, the Gold Minute and mode bonuses such as supply drops come on top, and a whole set you wear adds up to 20% more.

Ranks go from 1 to 60. Every rank pays 50 coins plus 15 for each rank number and 5 gems; every fifth rank pays 15 gems and a whole snake set, the first one you do not own yet.

Where to go next

FAQ

Is ONI Snakes free?

Yes. ONI Snakes: Armored Arena is free to play, with ads and optional in-app purchases.

Can I play ONI Snakes offline?

Yes. The Campaign, Quick Match, Ranked, the Daily Challenge and the other arena modes are played against computer-controlled snakes and work without a connection. The online arena and private rooms with friends need the internet.

How do I play with friends?

Tap WITH FRIENDS next to PLAY ONLINE, choose MAKE A ROOM and send your friends the five-letter code. They tap JOIN A ROOM and type it in. Computer snakes fill the empty places.

How do I kill a big snake?

Shoot its plates off and hit the bare core, or make its head touch your body. A big snake sheds more plates per bolt (8% of its size, up to 5 a hit), and a bolt in the rear half of a long snake also cuts its tail.

Why did my snake die when nothing hit it?

A snake dies at once when its head touches another snake's body or the arena wall, or when it stays a bare core for 7 seconds without eating back 3 plates. Bolts alone never kill an armored snake.
