ONI Snakes Game Modes: All 11 Explained, With Tips to Win Each

What every mode of ONI Snakes: Armored Arena asks of you, from the two-minute Quick Match to the 80-snake Battle Royale, the respawn modes, Boss Hunt and its four bosses, and the Campaign, Daily Challenge and Ranked, with a tip for winning each.

ONI Snakes: Armored Arena has 11 game modes. Eight are arenas with rules of their own, and three are ways to play them: the Campaign strings 40 levels together, the Daily Challenge adds a twist of the day, and Ranked sets you against rivals from your own league. Here is what each one asks of you, and how to win it.

We make ONI Snakes, so every number here comes from the game's code.

In every mode but Battle Royale, snakes that die are replaced by new ones, so the arena never empties. The power-ups, events and hazards of the arena work the same in every mode; our arena guide covers them.

Quick Match

Two minutes, 30 rivals and one goal: be the longest snake when the clock runs out. Everyone starts with 10 plates. From the 30th second, every 35 seconds a supply drop falls from the sky near you: grab it for 15 plates, a full magazine, 6 seconds of Overdrive and 30 coins. The computer snakes want it too, so be there when it lands.

Tip: a death ends your run. Your place is then worked out from your length at that moment, and a snake that died can never finish 1st, so play the last 20 seconds safely.

Deathmatch

20 snakes, 3 minutes and instant respawns: 3 seconds after a death you are back in. The score is frags. You get one for a snake that crashes into your body, one for a bare core you finish, and one for a core you stripped whose time runs out. A death costs you no frags, only the length you had, so keep fighting.

While you wait to come back, the camera shows the snake that got you, and when you return it wears a skull. Take it out for the Revenge medal.

Tip: frags decide your place, but the coins still pay on the longest length you reached, so eat between fights.

King of the Hill

18 snakes and one crown zone. Every second you hold the zone alone is a hill point; with a rival inside, it is contested and nobody scores. The zone moves every 45 seconds between four spots. The game warns you 10 seconds before, shows where the next zone will be and points to it with an arrow at the edge of the screen. Deaths work as in Deathmatch.

Tip: when the warning comes, leave early and wait at the next spot. The first snake there scores freely while the others are still fighting.

Team Battle

Three teams of six, Red, Green and Blue, and you are always Blue. There is no friendly fire: your bolts fly through teammates, you can cross their bodies, and drones, EMPs, rockets and toxic puddles leave them alone. The team with the most kills after 3 minutes wins. Your result is your team's place: a win pays like a 1st place for all six, 2nd like a 5th place and 3rd like an 11th.

Tip: stay close to your teammates. A rival busy fighting one of them is an easy strip for you.

Battle Royale

You and 80 rivals, 500 pieces of food that never grow back, and no respawns. After 40 seconds the safe zone begins to close, in four steps, down to a small last ring. Outside it the storm burns your plates and then your core, harder at every step: 1 plate a tick at first, 3 in the last ring. The next zone appears as a faint ring before it closes, and an arrow points to it.

The zone starts closing at 40, 95, 140 and 175 seconds. Your place is the number of snakes still in the match when you went out, so surviving counts for more than size.

Tip: move toward the next ring before the storm does. The fights happen at the edge, and a snake that arrives early can wait inside with a full magazine.

Boss Hunt

Everyone starts with 50 plates and no new food appears. Destroyed snakes leave no food either, so the only meals are the plates knocked off in fights. At 12 seconds the first boss arrives: a snake 1.4 times the size of the biggest one in the arena (from 180 to 380 plates), armed with a rocket launcher, and it hunts you. Up to three bosses come in one match. Each has a move of its own, always shown a moment before:

  • Titan King: Shockwave. A ring swells round it for a second, then every snake inside loses plates and is slowed.
  • Hydra: Salvo. It glows in its colour, then fires a fan of bolts at its prey.
  • Necro Wyrm: Phantom. It fades out and surges at its prey unseen.
  • Mecha Overlord: EMP. A charge crackles round it, then every gun inside the ring jams.

Bringing a boss down pays 150 coins (Boss Slayer) and spills a jackpot of gold orbs.

Tip: a boss uses its move every 8 to 11 seconds. When the warning shows, get out of the ring, then shoot while the move is spent. The computer snakes attack the boss too, so let them soften it up.

Scarcity

Two minutes with only 220 pieces of food on the floor, and nothing you eat grows back. Destroyed snakes leave no food, so every plate you knock off is worth fighting for. From the 12th second a weapon crate drops every 14 seconds, up to four at a time: whoever opens one fights with a Shotgun, Rifle, Sniper or Rocket for 25 seconds and gets cells too, even without owning that gun.

Tip: crates are the best way to grow here. A Rocket from a crate hits several snakes at once, and every plate it knocks off is food.

Infinity

No clock and 550 pieces of food: grow as big as you can for as long as you survive. The first wave comes at 45 seconds, then one every 75 seconds. Each wave brings two more snakes and the Golden Snake, and from then on new snakes start 6 plates bigger for every wave so far, up to 60 more. The Golden Snake runs instead of fighting; bring it down for a jackpot of 12 gold orbs and 50 coins plus 15 for each wave.

Tip: the waves only get harder, so bank length early and keep a DASH ready for the Golden Snake's escape.

Campaign

40 levels in five sectors (Neon Grid, Serpent Jungle, Bone Wastes, War Factory and Treasure Vault), each ended by a boss: Titan King, Hydra, Necro Wyrm, Mecha Overlord and the Golden Snake. A level is a match in one of the modes above with a goal: grow to a length, take out snakes, survive while hunted, score hill points or frags, finish high, or defeat the boss. One star clears the level and opens the next; three stars master it. Every level, star mark and reward is in our Campaign guide.

Daily Challenge

One mode and one twist a day, the same for everyone: Quick Match, Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Scarcity, Boss Hunt or Team Battle, with one of six mutators:

  • Speed Frenzy: every snake is a third faster.
  • Glass Cannon: every hit knocks off twice the plates.
  • Fog of War: the view closes in, the edges go dark and rivals vanish from the minimap.
  • Feast: two and a half times the food.
  • Rocket Party: every snake has a rocket launcher.
  • Low Battery: half the cells, and guns run hot.

Play it as often as you like; your best score counts. The score is your longest length, plus 50 for every snake you take out, plus 250, 150 or 100 for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd. You race 29 AI rivals on the daily board. The first run of each day pays a Rare chest, and when the day ends your place pays another: Legendary for 1st, Epic for 2nd and 3rd, Rare for 4th to 10th and Common after that.

Ranked

Ranked is a Quick Match against rivals from your own league: the higher your league, the sharper the computer snakes and the stronger their gear. Every trophy you win counts double, from +24 for 1st place to +4 for 11th to 15th. From Silver up, a finish in the bottom half costs trophies too: 2 for 16th to 20th place and 4 below that, 2 more in Diamond and Mythic. Other modes move trophies at the normal rate, and the Campaign does not move them at all.

Playing online

PLAY ONLINE puts you in an arena with real players, with computer snakes filling the empty places, and WITH FRIENDS opens a private room: make one and share its five-letter code, or type in a friend's code to join them. Both need an internet connection.

Which mode to play

  • To learn the game: Quick Match. It is short, forgiving and pays supply drops.
  • For trophies: Ranked, at double stakes, once you finish in the top 10 most of the time.
  • For coins: Boss Hunt (150 coins a boss) and Infinity (the Golden Snake), plus the Gold Minute in every timed match.
  • For chests: the Campaign's first clears, boss levels and star chests, and the Daily Challenge's first run of the day.
  • For the Hunter chest (ten snakes destroyed): Deathmatch, where the fights never stop.
  • For fun with friends: a private room.
